Tae Kwon Do & Hapkido

Tae Kwon Do is the Korean martial art of self-defense. Tae means foot, Kwon means fist, and Do means the way. It’s characterized by fast and powerful hand strikes and kicks, though it embodies much more than physical strength and speed. Like other Asian martial arts, Tae Kwon Do focuses on the connections between body, mind, and spirit. It stresses certain moral principles that have been commonly accepted by various religious and philosophical traditions. These values are courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit, and we honor them in class every day.

Tae Kwon Do is one of the most popular martial arts in the world today because it is accessible to men, women, and children of all ages and abilities. Our students choose to train with us for many reasons. Some say self-defense is their main reason; some say physical fitness. Others name artistic expression as their motivation, or character development, or competition. We can accommodate each and all of these priorities.

Our Tae Kwon Do classes offer a well-rounded curriculum that teaches the fundamental skills of blocking, punching, kicking and footwork. These skills are further developed through the practice of forms, which are prearranged movements against imaginary opponents. We also practice our skills against more realistic attacks, some of which are choreographed and some involving free sparring (with control and while wearing protective gear). We test the effectiveness of our techniques on various targets, including heavy hanging bags and, at times, by breaking wood.

Modern Arnis

Modern Arnis is a Filipino martial art that combines stick fighting with Karate, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu. It was developed by the late Grandmaster Remy Presas, who described it as “the art within your art”. This reflects the fact that Modern Arnis does not replace what you know, but rather it adds a new level of understanding to your art. By using sticks or knives or bare hands, the student is trained to attack and counter-attack in smoothly flowing sequences of action and reaction.

This is enhanced by some of the flowing movements of Modern Arnis (Stick fighting) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Grappling), so you can learn to defend yourself in virtually all situations. In the classroom we are guided by the Tae Kwon Do creed that states there are three ways to build self confidence: through knowledge in the mind, honesty in the heart, and strength in the body.
